Chrysler Releasing New Electric Vehicles

Back to News Home

September 25, 2008

Chrysler has recently announced that they will be releasing, not one, not two, but three different electric vehicles. The first of these should be available for purchase by 2010 and offer customers a great opportunity to cut their carbon footprint.

The three models will be as follows: the Town & Country minivan, the Jeep Wrangler, and a Dodge sports-car. This announcement is expected to bring Chrysler into direct competition with the Chevrolet Volt, to be released by General Motors.

Bob Nardelli, Chrysler’s CEO, said, “We have a social responsibility to our consumers to deliver environmentally friendly, fuel-efficient, advanced electric vehicles, and our intention is to meet that responsibility quickly and more broadly than any other automobile manufacturer.”

This is certainly a big claim by Chrysler. For the past several years all of the noise coming from Detroit has focused on the Volt. This announcement shows a significant shift in attention away from GM, towards Chrysler.

Recently, Chrysler released two hybrid vehicles, signalling a move into eco-friendly cars that will help drivers cut their carbon footprint, at a time when gas prices have never been higher. Even with this shift, no one expected such a big announced on electric vehicles from the ailing carmaker.

The line-up of electric vehicles seems to be three unusual choices. While most ‘environmental’ cars are traditional sized sedans, Chrysler is taking a gamble that people still want bigger cars as long as they aren’t as bad for their carbon footprint and don’t cost as much to fill up.
