The Climate Savers Computing Initiative is beginning a big push to increase its membership to include more companies that are committed to reducing their carbon footprint when using IT.
The group is backed by the WWF and is committed to cutting the energy used by IT systems in half by 2010. CSCI claims this would prevent 54 millions tons of carbon emissions during that time, a big step in the fight against global warming.
So far the group has been very successful at getting IT companies to join, including such giants as Google, HP, Dell, Microsoft, and Intel. CSCI is now pushing to get more organizations that are not directly in the IT industry but are still big purchasers and users of IT, and thus have a big carbon footprint related to their IT systems. Examples could include banks, government departments, or other intensive users of IT that have a desire to reduce their carbon footprint.
Organizations that are members of CSCI must purchase equipment based on a specified set of criteria, which includes only buying equipment that is Energy Star certified.
A spokesman for CSCI said “We are looking to rally support for the scheme and we are already seeing a lot of interest.”
He also emphasized that there is a business case for joining CSCI as the more efficient equipment generates a lot of savings on energy bills during their lifetime.
