The town of Rock Port, Missouri, does not often make headlines. But the small town of 1300 people is getting a lot of attention now for being the first town in America to be powered completely by wind. This is a great achievement in helping their citizens cut their carbon footprint and doing their part to fight global warming.
As a small town, Rock Port only requires four wind turbines to provide all of their power needs. Their four turbines are part of a larger wind farm that contains 75 turbines in total.
The Department of Energy has said that Missouri has the highest concentration of wind turbines in the country, along with an ideal geography for the generation of wind power.
Jim Crawford, an engineer at the University of Missouri Extension in Columbia, said “That’s something to be very proud of, especially in a rural area like this – that we’re doing our part for the environment.”
In addition to helping citizens cut their carbon footprint and fight global warming, the increasing use of land in the region for wind farms is vastly increasing the real estate tax revenues in the sparsely populated region
As well, since the turbines have an expected life of 20 years, gives a lot of stability to the area for their utility prices.
